Brooklyn Botanic Garden 2003 Annual Report
Partnerships
Now in its sixth year, Brooklyn Cultural Adventures Program (BCAP) is a collaboration that unites the diverse resources of Brooklyn's major cultural organizations in an innovative summer camp for children aged 9 to 12. Under the leadership of the Heart of Brooklyn: A Cultural Partnership, which counts as its members Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Children's Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn Public Library, Prospect Park Alliance (including Lefferts Homestead and the Audubon Center in Prospect Park), and Prospect Park Zoo, children participate in a wide array of cultural activities. One hundred thirty-two children participated in the summer program. Scholarship assistance was provided for 54 percent of the participants.
Movers and shakers aged 9 to 12 participated in a smorgasbord of activities at six Brooklyn cultural institutions during the BCAP summer camp.
The Garden also participated in a unique partnership between students of Intermediate School 218, which focuses on education for future health professionals, and the Watburg Lutheran Home for the Aging. Using the Garden as their backdrop, students from IS 218 learned how to interact with seniors by engaging them in activities and serving as guides.
For the seventh year in a row the Garden cohosted Plant-O-Rama along with the Metro Hort Group. This symposium and trade show features leading nurseries, specialty growers, horticultural suppliers, and other greening organizations.
For the third year, BBG provided NYC Department of Parks and Recreation gardening staff with vital horticultural training. The 21 gardeners who participated in this in-depth training program received instruction in various areas of urban horticulture, including "Pest and Disease Management," "Pruning," and "Soil Management." In addition to providing horticultural training, BBG staff also taught advanced seminars offered by the Parks Department such as "Advanced Botany," which had 25 participants.
