Institutional Funding Coordinator
Reports To: Institutional Funding Manager
The Institutional Funding Coordinator is part of a 14-person department that is responsible for raising approximately $5 million in annual operating support from a variety of funding sources. This position reports to the Institutional Funding Manager, with support from the Director of Institutional Funding, to raise approximately $2 million grants from foundations, corporations and select government agencies through grants and sponsorship.
Primary Responsibilities/Activities:
- Oversee gift processing, maintain accurate records and filing systems, update database and tracking documents, and write acknowledgment letters.
- Manage submission of sponsorship proposals by working closely with marketing staff and maintaining calendar of print deadlines to ensure timely submission of sponsorship proposals.
- Identify and develop corporate volunteer opportunities, working closely with program staff.
- Develop and maintain a schedule of regular corporate email communication with event announcements, enewsletters, etc.
- Coordinate other aspects of donor stewardship, including logistics for donor site visits, and assisting with donor cultivation events.
- Manage research and prospecting via print and online sources.
- Write proposals and reports as assigned, usually adapting and editing boilerplate proposals, letters of inquiry and concept papers to create unique and compelling submissions for renewals and new funding opportunities.
- Write donor relations correspondence and respond to general inquiries.
Qualifications:
BA with superior organizational skills, strong attention to detail, maintaining multiple projects and meeting deadlines. Minimum of two years development experience, including grant writing or development writing. Experience with corporate philanthropy and partnerships strongly preferred. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office. Experience with fundraising software required, Raisers Edge a plus. Capacity to work independently and as part of a team to fulfill the goals of the department, and interact with staff at all levels. Background or strong interest in cultural institutions, environment, education and science desired.

GreenBridge Program Manager
Reports to: Director, Brooklyn GreenBridge
Brooklyn GreenBridge, the community environmental horticulture program of Brooklyn Botanic Garden, promotes the greening of the urban environment through education, conservation, and creative partnerships. GreenBridge is building a vibrant network of people, places and projects dedicated to making Brooklyn a greener, healthier place. As part of the Education Department at BBG, GreenBridge works in partnership with block associations, community gardens, social service agencies, and other groups. In 2007 GreenBridge completed a four-year strategic plan. A key responsibility of the GreenBridge program manager is to help implement this plan through development of a new Brooklyn Urban Gardener certificate program.
Primary Responsibilities/Activities:
- Develop the new Brooklyn Urban Gardener certificate program through research, collaboration with an outside curriculum consultant, and teaching of pilot workshops leading up to the program launch in late 2010
- Manage the Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest and its ancillary activities: the entry process, the Window Box Kit Sale, three rounds of judging, press conference, and Recognition Ceremony for participants
- Organize and produce Making Brooklyn Bloom, the annual community horticulture conference at BBG
- Create and sustain the educational outreach of Brooklyn GreenBridge on current topics of sustainable urban horticulture, which include growing food, street trees, biodiversity, rainwater harvesting, and new frontiers for greening
- Ongoing responsibilities include organizing events, leading workshops, writing tip sheets and promotional material, editing the GreenBridge Gardener newsletter and all Listrak email announcements, and database management
- Work with GreenBridge director to coordinate the therapeutic horticulture network
The GreenBridge program manager directly supervises the GreenBridge outreach assistant, as well as seasonal interns and volunteers as available.
Qualifications
BA or BS degree (masters degree preferred) in education, horticulture, environmental science or related field required; 3-4 years experience in urban horticulture preferred. Curriculum development experience for adult learners also strongly preferred. Keen interest and ease in working with the public; strong interpersonal skills. Self-starter; able to work alone and as part of a team. Excellent writing and teaching skills; experience in public speaking helpful. Able to handle basic office organization, including file management, word processing, and database upkeep. Knowledge of Access and Listrak preferred. Experience living in an urban setting strongly preferred. Able to address the unique challenges of urban gardening. Valid NYS driver's license (driving is required). Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred.
Supervising Instructor/Children's Garden Coordinator
Reports to: Manager of Family Programs
Responsible for implementation of gardening programs for children ages 3-13. Works with the Manager of Family Programs to assist program development, schedule program series, hire and train staff, and oversee all classes within the Children's Garden.
Primary Responsibilities/Activities:
- Assist in the training and supervision of part-time seasonal instructors to provide informal education programs for pre-school, elementary, and middle school aged children in the Children's Garden
- Assist the ongoing development and oversee delivery of a standard core curriculum for instruction of age appropriate horticultural classes in the Children's Garden
- Coordinate the horticultural maintenance plan with seasonal instructional themes for children's classes, working with full time and seasonal instructors to implement the plan
- Work with the GAP Instructors to coordinate the schedule and duties of Garden Apprentices assisting with Children's Garden classes
- Assist the Manager of Family Programs in the recruitment and hiring of part-time seasonal instructors
- Plan and coordinate events for participants' families, including program orientation, seasonal celebrations, and awards
Supervision Exercised:
Supervision of seasonal instructors and teen interns
Qualifications
BA or BS degree (Master's preferred) in education, environmental education, botany, biology, or related field. Minimum of two years experience as an educator. Direct experience working with children. Experience in horticulture, preferably with food plants. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with different audiences. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, internet, etc. Valid driver's license.
