Art and Science Come Together At Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Prospect Park Zoo

New Scientific Illustration Course Begins June 23

Brooklyn, NY—June 15, 2009—Students have huddled in the hallways of art museums for centuries, carefully studying and copying the works of old masters. But two of New York City's leading living museums—Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) and Prospect Park Zoo (PPZ)—are collaborating to offer students the opportunity to meticulously study and illustrate subjects that don't just hang on a wall. Scientific Illustration: Flora and Fauna, a six-week course offered in late June through early August, allows students up-close and personal access to the Garden's and the Zoo's living collections: plants and animals.

Scientific Illustration was conceived and developed to offer budding illustrators a unique 360-degree perspective of the living world through the concurrent study of both plants and animals. The course will introduce students to the techniques scientific illustrators use to make complex forms simpler to understand and to draw; instruct them on mixing realistic color; and develop their skills in working from live models in motion.

Scientific Illustration: Flora and Fauna begins on June 23 and runs weekly on Tuesdays through August 4. A fee and registration are required; members of BBG or Prospect Park Zoo receive a special discount on the class. For more information, visit http://www.bbg.org/edu/adult, call Brooklyn Botanic Garden's registration office at 718-623-7220, or call Prospect Park Zoo at 718-399-7339.
