Brooklyn, New York—OCTOBER 27, 2009—Have a treasured photo, an antique program, or other piece of tangible memorabilia from Brooklyn Botanic Garden's first 100 years? This fall, the Garden invites its visitors near and far to share their personal memories for its 2010 multimedia exhibit in celebration of its centennial, "100 Years, 100 Stories."
From now until November 30, citizens can upload their photos of memorable times spent at BBG to the Garden's Flickr group. For non-digital contributions, BBG will host two Memory Collection Days (November 1 and 5) when photographs and memorabilia can be brought in for scanning into an archive. All submitted material will be considered for exhibition.
In the summer of 2010, "100 Years, 100 Stories" will showcase BBG's history, collections, and important achievements, as well as more personal stories from Garden visitors and staff. Elements of the exhibit will be presented throughout the Garden and on the BBG website, with a special selection of images on display in the Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery.
So dust off those photo albums, dig through old shoe boxes, and check the hard drive for images and items that capture your most memorable Garden moments!
How to Contribute to "100 Years, 100 Stories":
1) For Digital Photos:
Upload your favorite three digital images to the appropriate Flickr group (see below) and share a description of the special memory each represents. You need to be a member of Flickr to use this service. (Basic membership is free.) The BBG Stories groups on the internet will be a great place to see other memories that visitors have shared.
BBG Stories: Before 2000 – www.flickr.com/groups/bbg_before2000
BBG Stories: 2000 to present – www.flickr.com/groups/bbg_2000topresent
The images should be the largest size possible (preferably 300 dpi or 1600 x 1200 pixels). Please include a story with your image (maximum 150 words)—we want to know the heartwarming memories behind your pictures!
Please note that by posting your photo in these public groups, you and the other subjects are providing consent for the image to be shared online and used for the exhibits. You will be contacted if your submissions are selected for the BBG centennial exhibit.
2) FOR ALL OTHER PHOTOS AND MEMORABILIA:
Come to BBG's Memory Collection Days! Bring your three favorite photos or objects to the BBG Auditorium (in the Visitor Center) for us to scan. (They won't be harmed and will be returned.) We will then add the images to BBG's online Flickr groups. You may also bring digital images or memorabilia on these official collection days.
Day 1: Sunday, November 1 · 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Day 2: Thursday, November 5 · 1 to 4 p.m.
