BBG and Metro Hort Group Present
13th Annual Plant-O-Rama
Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
At Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Rain or Shine
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK—JANUARY 9, 2009—Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) and Metro Hort Group (MHG) present the 13th Annual Plant-O-Rama, the only winter trade show and symposium in the New York area, with 45 exhibitors presenting the latest, cutting-edge horticultural products. This daylong event attracts more than 1,000 horticulture professionals and enthusiasts to preview new plants, products, and services offered in 2009. Green thumbs from all over will enjoy this multifaceted event, featuring the following:
9 a.m. – 4 p.m. FREE Exhibits Hall Show in BBG's beautiful Palm House. Exhibitors represent the NYC metro region's premier specialty nurseries and wholesale growers, pottery vendors, horticultural suppliers, public gardens, and greening organizations!
9 a.m – 4 p.m. FREE Nursery and Seed Catalog Display, featuring plant and seed catalogs for distribution and reference, plus catalogs online in BBG's Gardener's Resource Center.
9 a.m – 4 p.m. Library Book Sale offering an excellent collection of used and as-new books on gardening and horticulture, including some collectible gems. BBG's first book sale in eight years!
Symposium:

- 9:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. Keynote Talk by Dan Hinkley, plantsman extraordinaire, author, plant collector, and founder of Heronmedia and Heronswood Nursery:
"Sensational, Safe, Sustainable: Good Plants for a Good Zone 6." Acclaimed plant explorer Dan Hinkley examines garden-worthy plants that don't escape garden boundaries and wisely use resources. Dan last spoke at Plant-O-Rama in 1998—11 years later he offers an update on how to surround ourselves with inspired landscapes. - 10:45 – 11:45 a.m. Keynote Talk by Michael Dosmann, PhD, curator of living collections at the Arnold Arboretum:
"Tried-and-True, Hopeful-and-New: Plant Introductions from the Arnold Arboretum." The plant collections at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University are a tremendous resource for scientists, educators, and the gardening public. Hear firsthand what the curator of living collections has to say about the institution's plant introductions and what lies ahead for its renowned collections. - 1 – 2 p.m. Keynote talk by Ken Druse, award-winning author and photographer, founding member of the Metro Hort Group and host of popular radio show Real Dirt:
"Secrets Revealed! Planthropology: the Myths, Mysteries and Miracles of Our Garden Favorites," In a wide-ranging talk based on his new book, Ken Druse describes explorers past and present racing across the globe like Indiana Jones in search of rare specimens; the dynamics of fragrant plants and memory; how plants in art initiated a social movement; and plant patterns that mimic seashells and the stars of the Milky Way. - 3 – 3:30 p.m. Raffle Prizes and Book Signing in the Exhibits Hall
BBG Garden Gift Shop: Offering a well-stocked selection of gardening and horticulture tools, gifts, plants, seeds, and books—including BBG's renowned All-Region Guides.
BBG Terrace Café: A menu selection of delicious soups, sandwiches, desserts, and beverages in the lower level of the Steinhardt Conservatory.
The show and Nursery and Seed Catalog Display are free to all. The symposium is free for Metro Hort Group members, BBG staff, and BBG volunteers; all others $40 at door. Symposium events take place in the BBG auditorium. No preregistration is necessary, but seating is first come and limited to 300 per talk.
