Summer Instructors: Garden Apprentice Program

BBG’s children’s education programs are world renowned for using the Garden’s indoor, outdoor, and preserved plant collections to teach plant science to urban children. BBG’s Garden Apprentice Program (GAP) is an innovative youth-development program for teens in grades 8 through 12 who are interested in plants, science, and environmental education. Instructors must participate in an intensive three-week orientation and lesson-plan-development period prior to teaching in the GAP program.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assist with the implementation of the GAP summer program.
- Develop and teach a two-week training institute for a group of 12 to 15 teens on topics such as research and presentation skills, public speaking, horticulture, science, and leadership development.
- Supervise and mentor apprentices as they work in their job placements during the summer.
- Assist with horticulture and cooking sessions with the teens in the Children’s Garden.
- Develop weekly lessons on current environmental issues, team-building exercises, and enrichment activities.
Qualifications:
- Minimum completion of college classes with a demonstrated interest in and commitment to hands-on education, youth development principles, urban agriculture, plants, and the environment.
- Must have experience teaching teens.
- Ideal candidates are experienced and comfortable working with youth and staff from diverse backgrounds.
Work Schedule: Training: Tuesday–Friday, 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m.; Program: Tuesday–Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
Compensation: $10/hour
