Director of Government and Community Affairs

Reports to: President
The director of Government and Community Affairs is responsible for identifying and securing public funding and monitoring policy initiatives within the city, state, and federal levels of government. The director is responsible for developing and implementing a focused and effective government relations and community affairs agenda for city, state, and federal agencies, elected and appointed officials, and their staff. The director also maintains active partnerships with government agencies, community organizations, and community boards to build capacity and support for the programs and projects at BBG. The director helps communicate and advance the Garden’s mission and goals to governmental programs, including the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, Department of Environmental Conservation, and NYC Department of Sanitation.
- Serve as the point person for the Garden’s relationships with city, state, and federal agencies as well as with elected and appointed officials and their staff.
- Collaborate with BBG staff to research, develop, and continually refine the Garden’s public funding and community relations goals.
- Implement a focused and effective government-relations strategy for federal, state, and local government agencies and elected and appointed officials, through such means as direct advocacy, preparation, and distribution of advocacy materials, including arrangement of advocacy events.
- Implement a focused and effective community relations strategy.
- Provide timely information to the president and BBG vice presidents with respect to important funding opportunities, laws, policies, and public-agency news.
- Represent BBG in multiagency (e.g., Cultural Institute Group, Friends of the Environment) processes to communicate and advance BBG’s public funding goals.
- Coordinate with Coalition of Living Museums steering committee and membership across New York State to ensure a unified message for support of the NYS Environmental Protection Fund.
- Assist the president and other senior staff in developing grant proposals, expense reports, and capital requests to obtain and report on public funding.
- Represent BBG at community meetings and related events.
- Plan and direct community events and community outreach efforts in coordination with other Garden departments.
- Assist with planning and coordination the implementation of BBG’s Master Site Plan.
- Write testimony and represent the Garden at public hearings.
- Supervise activities of advocacy consultants.
- Ensure lobbying compliance through external registration and reporting requirements.
- Monitor timely reporting of legislative grant payments.
- Perform other related duties and special projects as directed.
- Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
- Minimum five years’ related experience
- Excellent understanding of federal, state, and local policy framework and budget processes
- Expert understanding of government decision-making and funding processes
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Experience in government affairs and government decision-making processes
- Lobbying experience strongly preferred
- Ability to vigorously represent the Garden to elected and appointed officials, agencies, outside organizations, and members of the public
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with others across the organization; possess good team-playing skills, including diligence, creativity, and a healthy sense of humor
- Excellent organizational skills and self-direction; experience juggling many projects at once with attention to detail
- Successful experience in building and nurturing partnerships, relationships, and coalitions
- Successful experience in developing, directing, and managing multiple projects
