                <p><p>The director of Interpretation and Exhibitions is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing outstanding interpretation programs and exhibitions consistent with BBG’s mission and brand.</p>

<p>In coordination with the VP of Facilities Planning, Construction, and Management, the director of Interpretation and Exhibitions will assist in managing approximately $4 million of new interpretive projects over the next four years.</p>
</p>        
                
        
                <h3>Primary Responsibilities:</h3>      
        <ul>
<li>Identifies the need and opportunity for interpretive programs and special exhibitions in coordination with senior staff from other departments including Horticulture, Science, Education and Marketing (including Digital and Print Media and Public Programs).</li>

<li>Takes the lead role in planning, developing, and implementing excellent interpretation programs for BBG, including but not limited to staff and volunteer training in interpretive techniques; interpretive signage and exhibitions; print and web materials; podcasts or cell phone guides; special exhibitions; programs; and other new interpretive projects.</li>

<li>Manages all aspects of interpretive project development, including conceiving, budgeting, researching, writing, collecting images or recordings, routing for credits and approval, production, and installation.</li>

<li>Inventories, reviews, maintains, and updates all existing interpretive content and updates the master interpretive plan.</li>

<li>Works with internal staff to creatively direct design, editing, and production and/or coordinate these activities with outside agencies, and manages process to ensure timely deliveries.</li>

<li>Manages the planning, implementation, and long- term strategy of the Garden Guide training program. Writes RFPs, negotiates contracts, and manages projects with external vendors such as designers, writers, content experts, media producers, fabricators, evaluators, and other contractors as needed.</li>

<li>Serves as curator of the Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery with the responsibilities of researching potential artists; scheduling and curating exhibitions; managing contracts, insurance coverage, correspondence with artists, and coordinating with BBG staff on gallery maintenance; creating postcards, display materials, and labels; working hands-on with artists to install and de-install gallery shows; planning and supervising weekend gallery receptions. <em>Weekend work is required</em>.</li>

<li>Supervises manager of Interpretation, external contractors, and volunteers assigned to program.</li>
</ul>

<h3>Secondary Responsibilities/Activities</h3>

<ul>
<li>Distributes materials efficiently and effectively.</li>

<li>Ensures that all materials are in compliance with the American Disabilities Act.</li>

<li>Oversees front-end, formative, and summative evaluation of projects, as needed.</li>

<li>Collaborates with BBG grant writer to identify and apply for grants to support the exhibition and interpretation programs at BBG.</li>

<li>Performs any other departmental duties as directed by supervisor, including long-term scheduling, budgeting, and academic dissemination of work.</li>
</ul>   
        
                <h3>Qualifications:</h3>
        <ul>
<li>Master’s degree preferred in education, museum studies, interpretation, exhibition design, or similar field</li>
<li>Knowledge of horticulture, botany, natural history, or environmental science required</li>
<li>Five years’ management experience in interpretive planning and implementation and/or exhibition planning and implementation</li>
<li>Proven leadership ability and management supervisory skills</li>
<li>Excellent writing and communication skills; good research abilities</li>
<li>Ability to lead teams, develop effective relationships with staff and external vendors, communicate and listen effectively with different audiences</li>
<li>Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously</li>
<li>Competence with Microsoft Office applications; knowledge of print, graphic, and other media production processes</li>
<li>Weekend work required; travel to conferences and professional events</li>

<li>Learn prospect research and other development-related projects.</li>
<li>Learn how to research and identify prospective donors using internet databases, search engines, and fundraising software.</li> 
<li>Learn how to compile detailed donor profiles.  </li> 
</ul>   
        
                <h3>Qualifications:</h3>
        <ul>
<li>Completion (or current pursuit of) bachelor’s degree or master’s degree</li>
<li>Excellent verbal and writing skills</li>
<li>Energetic self-starter with positive attitude</li>
<li>Experience with LexisNexis or other research databases desired but not required</li>
<li>Computer literacy (particularly in Microsoft Office suite of programs)</li>
</ul>

                <p><p>BBG&#8217;s horticulture internship supports our mission to use the Garden as a working garden, living laboratory, and educational resource. Each year, interns have an eight-month, hands-on experience working directly with BBG&#8217;s internationally respected horticulture staff.</p>

<p>Internships are open to any adult over 18 who has a strong interest in horticulture. The applicant must be able to do physical labor outdoors and posses a valid driver&#8217;s license. This program is designed for people interested in pursuing a career in horticulture.</p>
