Have you ever tasted the legendary mangosteen or the mysterious dragon fruit? These are just a few of the enticing exotic fruits that draw people to distant lands. But you only have to come to BBG! Discover the sweet secrets of tropical and subtropical fruits—from their healing properties to their classification to where to find rare delicacies hidden in the corners of our city. Nat Bletter will present various fruits for eating and examination.

Hatha Yoga (mixed levels)

Hatha yoga is the practice of physical postures and movements to increase physical strength and flexibility and restore balance between body, mind, and spirit. The practice has developed over thousands of years, and many of the postures mimic plants, trees, flowers, animals, and insects. In the beautiful natural setting of BBG, we will work through yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditation. Please bring a towel or yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing that allows free movement. No previous experience necessary. Classes held rain (indoors) or shine (outdoors).

Tai Chi Chuan

Tai chi chuan ("supreme ultimate") is a Chinese martial art emphasizing balance between yin and yang. Regular practice improves blood circulation, relaxes mind and body, increases chi (internal energy), and gives a good night's sleep. With the exception of Tai Chi I, classes will be held outside.
In case of inclement weather, class will be held indoors. Wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement.
Tai Chi Chuan I
This class includes step-by-step instruction in the principles of this ancient Chinese exercise. No previous experience is necessary. Class is held indoors.

A Cinco de Mayo Chocolate Experience
Nat Bletter
From the Mayan and Aztec use of seeds for currency and ceremonies to grand European chocolate houses, cacao has played an important role in many cultures. Ethnobotanist Nat Bletter will share the complete history of chocolate and its many current and future uses. Class includes tasting of organic and flavored delights plus preparation of Aztec Hot Chocolate with Chipotle Chiles (recipe included).

Beyond Oregano: Expand Your Herbal Palate in the Garden and Kitchen
Leda Meredith
Dozens of culinary herbs are waiting to excite your palate with new tastes. In addition to basic herb gardening skills, you'll learn how to grow and cook with za'atar, wild ginger, monarda, and other lovely and unusual herbs, and you'll find out which herbs will do best in your garden. The class introduces interesting varieties such as orange thyme, chocolate mint, and golden marjoram.

Feasting for Free in Brooklyn!
Leda Meredith
No need to travel far or seek out so-called "exotic" cultures; there's a long and rich tradition of gathering wild plants for food right here in Brooklyn! Leda will guide the class through the history of wild food gathering in the eastern U.S. and will show you edible wild plants found right here in Prospect Park! From fresh dandelion greens to savory wild garlic to juicy blackberries, there's plenty to eat right within arm's reach! Please wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.
