Important Information for School Groups

If you have any questions about the following information, please contact the Registration Office at 718-623-7220.

Visiting Procedures for School Groups

A Botanic Garden is not a park, but a living collection of plants for study and aesthetic enjoyment. Whether participating in a guided program or bringing a class for a self-guided visit, teachers are responsible for their students and must observe all Garden regulations.

Guided Programs

Our professional staff of informal educators has developed a wide range of opportunities specifically for Teachers and School Students in our city. We have a full suite of field trip offerings for classes visiting the Garden.

Self-Guided Visits

New this year, we now have a procedure to pre-register your class before you come to tour the Garden on your own. The admission for school groups is free, as always, but pre-registration enables us to assure your group quality access to our collections and facilities on the date you've selected.

Supervisory Adults

Every group must have a ratio of one adult per 10 children. For grades pre-K to 1, a ratio of one adult per 7-8 children is recommended. Supervisory adults are responsible for their student's behavior and the observation of all Garden regulations.

Traveling with Lunches

In general, we encourage school groups to have lunch before entering or after leaving the Garden. Picnic areas located near the Garden include Prospect Park (across Flatbush Avenue) and Mount Prospect Park (at Eastern Parkway).

The Garden has limited seating available in a designated uncovered outdoor school lunch area located near the Flatbush Avenue entrance gate. Unfortunately, this area is not easily wheelchair accessible without assistance. The school lunch area is open seasonally (September- October, April-June) during the public school year, Tuesday-Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 pm. School groups must be accompanied by the appropriate ratio of adult chaperones.

Garden Gift Shop

BBG's gift shop offers a selection of books, plants and gifts for purchase, including a special children's section. School groups are welcome to shop in small groups of 10, with adult supervision.

Ready! Set! Grow! A Shop for Kids

Open seasonally late March through June, this shop offers kid-friendly books, educational games, puzzles, plants, and souvenir items. School groups are welcome to shop in small groups of 10, with adult supervision.

Accessibility

Most facilities at the Garden are wheelchair accessible, including the main entrance, Education greenhouse, the Steinhardt Conservatory and several restrooms. Please let us know if individuals will be arriving by wheelchair or if they are physically challenged, so that we can help you plan your route accordingly.
