Big City, Big Trees
1. Eastern Parkway Entrance Area
Sawtooth Oak (Quercus acutissima)
| Native Habitat: | Southeast Asia |
Photo: Medi Blum.
The leaves of the sawtooth oak have bristletipped teeth and resemble chestnut leaves more than oak leaves. Similarly noteworthy, the tree's acorns appear to wear miniature wigs; their cups are covered in hairy scales. Sawtooth oaks have recently begun selfseeding in eastern forests, crowding out native trees. The National Park Service has therefore labeled Quercus acutissima an invasive plant.
