In the spring and summer, it can be difficult to distinguish the scarlet oak from its near relative the pin oak (Quercus palustris). But come autumn, its bright red leaves make Quercus coccinea a standout. Scarlet oaks are hardy and can grow in acidic soil, eventually reaching over 70 feet tall and spreading up to 50 feet wide. They are also a popular street tree. Check out the newly planted scarlet oaks in the Cherry Esplanade.
