London plane trees are planted all over the capital of England—and in Paris, Tokyo, Madrid, Buenos Aires, New York, and numerous other cities. Tolerant of pollution and compacted soil, this hybrid of the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and the Oriental plane tree (Platanus orientalis) is a champion among street trees. Its leaf is the symbol of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
