Lacebark Pine (Pinus bungeana)

Like the London plane tree, the lacebark pine is easy to distinguish by its flaking bark, which traces lacy patterns of brown, gray, and green on the tree's trunk. When the lacebark pine reaches maturity, its bark turns white—earning the species its Chinese name, bai pi song, which means "white bark pine." In China, lacebark pines are highly valued and are often planted near temples.
