Big City, Big Trees
6. South of Steinhardt Conservatory
White Willow (Salix alba 'Tristis')
| Native Habitat: | Cultivated |
Reaching about 75 feet tall, this white willow cultivar is sometimes called the golden weeping willow because each year's new twigs are yellow. Willow tree bark contains a plant hormone called salicylic acid (named after Salix, the tree's genus name), which is closely related to aspirin. And the next time you visit a pharmacy, note how many products contain salicylic acid—everything from shampoos to skin treatments.
