Pin oaks grow quickly up to 70 or more feet in height. Because they originally adapted to survive in wetlands, their roots do not penetrate very deeply into the ground but instead branch out shallowly. This makes the pin oak relatively easy to transplant. In this photo, BBG workers in 1929 are moving a pin oak from one part of the Garden to another.
