Prunus serrulata

The majority of Oriental flowering cherries have their genesis in this species. Varieties of this cherry are the cultivated cherries or satozakura of Japan. Generally they are small or medium-sized trees whose leaves, beginning at the same time as flowering, are a bronze or orangey color. In maturity the leaves become green, but fall brings brilliant shades of red and orange. Although of utmost importance to Japanese horticulturalists, this species is thought to be of Chinese origin. Flowers are double and pure white.
