The sweet scents and early blossoms of the magnolias at Brooklyn Botanic Garden signal that spring has officially begun. This year marks the 75th anniversary of BBG's Judith D. Zuk Magnolia Plaza. Magnolia Plaza was first planted in the spring of 1932, and over the years it has grown into a substantial collection of hardy magnolia species as well as a number of unique cultivars created by BBG scientists. Best known are a series of yellow-flowered magnolias including 'Elizabeth', 'Lois', and, recently, the special cultivar named for BBG's fifth president, the 'Judy Zuk'. Magnolias were Zuk's favorite flowering plant, and in 2005 Magnolia Plaza was named in her honor. The Garden's Magnolia Collection is currently being expanded to include, among other things, a number of top hybrids inspired by BBG breeding work. A number of new trees are set to bloom this year for only the first or second time, including Magnolia 'Athene' and 'Iolanthe'.
