Cupressocyparis leylandii is a sterile evergreen hybrid that can only be propagated with root cuttings. Because of this, there are no naturally occurring Leyland cypress in the wild. Cupressocyparis leylandii grows well in USDA Zones 6 to 10 and tolerates a wide variety of growing conditions. It is fast growing, sometimes reaching heights of 50 feet in just 16 years. The Leyland cypress was introduced into the United States in California in 1941, where its rapid, thick growth made it a popular choice for homeowners looking for privacy.
