Pinus strobus is a large pine native to eastern North America, from Newfoundland west to Minnesota, and south through the Appalachian Mountains and Georgia. It is the state tree of both Maine and Michigan. It is considered to be the largest pine in the United States, with the largest documented specimen measuring 188 feet tall. Pinus strobus is also a long-lived species; Wisconsin and Michigan have white pines that are nearly 500 years old.
