This lovely wildflower has big fans among horticulturists and hummingbirds alike. Voted one of the top ten native hummingbird plants by Operation RubyThroat, an international avian research organization, Spigelia marilandica's nectar-filled, trumpet-shaped flowers are a striking bright crimson with bright yellow interiors. Gardeners love the riot of color the plant brings to shade gardens—and also appreciate how low maintenance and hardy it is. Keeping the plant well watered and removing flowers as they wither may even extend the midsummer bloom time from one month to three.
