P12. Tricyrtis formosana 'Samurai'
Toad lily (cultivar)
Hardiness: USDA Zones 6–8
Partial–full shade
Moist soil
1–1½ feet tall
Easy-to-grow, hardy Tricyrtis formosana 'Samurai' is a surefire charmer in a shade border. Its lilylike wine-colored flowers bear dark purple spots and yellow throats and bloom in abundance in late summer and early autumn. With creamy-gold edges to its lance-shaped, variegated leaves, 'Samurai' smartly accents a border of ferns; plant it in the front, as this cultivar is a compact form, about half the size of other toad lilies. Grow in moist, well-drained soil in partial to full shade.
