T13. Cornus alternifolia 'WStackman' golden shadows
Pagoda dogwood (cultivar)
Hardiness: USDA Zones 3–8
Partial–full shade
Moist soil
Native plant
6–12 feet tall
Introduced by Spring Meadow Nursery in 2006, golden shadows has stunningly variegated elliptical foliage. With vibrant lime-green centers ringed by golden yellow, the leaves are borne on horizontally tiered, burgundy-tinted branches, making a strong statement in the landscape. A small tree that tops out at 6 to 12 feet high, this hybrid bears reddish-orange new growth and small clusters of white flowers, giving it further appeal in the garden. Grow in partial shade to protect the leaves from sun scorch, and keep the soil moist but well drained.
