T20. Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls'
American wisteria (cultivar)
Hardiness: USDA Zones 5–9
Full sun–partial shade
Average soil
Native plant
10–15 feet tall
The Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls' planted at BBG last year along Washington Avenue are living up to their reputation as fast bloomers, showing flowers in their first year. Native to the southeastern U.S., the plant can reach 10 to 15 feet but won't overtake your garden. The fragrant flowers are held compactly like bunches of grapes on 6- to 8-inch-long racemes, to some reminiscent of small purple-blue waterfalls. Excellent in gardens tight on space, 'Amethyst Falls' is notable as well for its attractive small, gray-green foliage and purple-brown bark.
