President’s Circle Spring 2014 Events

After a long winter, the President’s Circle kicked off its lively lineup of spring events on March 26 with an exclusive discourse on BBG’s magnolias and the Annual Border by BBG curator Wayken Shaw. Though wintry weather still lingered and kept the showy magnolia blossoms in hiding, guests braved the chilly air on a quick walking tour around Lily Pool Terrace for an inside look at the design process for the Annual Border.

As the first few highly anticipated blossoms began to appear, President’s Circle members celebrated with the Sakura Matsuri Private Preview on April 24. Guests gathered at the Visitor Center Atrium Terrace for a sneak peak at the burgeoning buds of Japanese flowering cherries, announcing the long-awaited arrival of spring. Japanese-themed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails delighted guests as they strolled under the canopy of emerging blossoms along Cherry Walk and along the paths of the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden.

An exciting change of venue occurred during the Bluebell Magic event on May 14. With the bluebells still shyly sleeping in the cool spring weather, guests gathered instead around the fountain in the Osborne Garden, where they were dazzled by the riot of color bursting from the surrounding azaleas and wisteria. BBG’s new director of Gardens and Grounds, Ronnit Bendavid-Val, captivated guests as she described her experience working in the world of public parks and gardens and outlined exciting plans for Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s grounds in the coming years.
