How to Do a Search
Three categories of key words are available for conducting a search of the database: scientific name, geographical and topical.
- Scientific Name It is possible to search by either the family or the genus. It is also possible to search by six broad plant categories as key words - Woody, Herbaceous, Aquatics, Graminoid, Ferns and Conifers
- Geographical It is possible to search any of the three states or the 25 counties within the range of the project. Additional terms include New York City, Long Island and Long Island Sound.
- Topical Most topical key words are self-explanatory, but searchable
key words that are broader in nature are described below:
- Cytology Includes genetics, polyploidy, etc.
- Ecology Includes all biotic and abiotic influences, phytopathology, insect pests, restoration ecology, etc.
- ID Botanical keys, other identification aids
- Local Flora Specific mention of plants within the stated geographical range of the project
- WWW Web sites
