Visions of Nature: Classes at the Garden 2010 Student and Teacher Art Exhibition

Visions of Nature features the work of the talented artists who participated in BBG's Continuing Education program in 2009, reflecting the array of media and themes studied here. Brooklyn Botanic Garden offers a unique urban setting in which to contemplate the beauty of nature and learn about all things plant-related. Classes for adults have been offered at the Garden since it was founded in 1910. As many as 2,000 adults study at the Garden each year, learning about everything from soil management to painting and photography.

Composting with Lovely Redworms

Did you know that redworms have five pairs of hearts? Come to this workshop and find out more about this unique species. Learn all about vermicomposting, including how to make and maintain a home for redworms. Participants will receive a voucher to buy a pound of redworms and a plastic worm bin for only $44. Are you looking to make your neighborhood a greener place? Don't go it alone! This workshop covers the basics of community organizing for neighborhood greening projects. Topics include outreach, presentation skills, project management, and consensus building. Learn about simple projects that have had a big impact in neighborhoods throughout the city, and brainstorm with workshop instructors on your own community greening project. Nature is the theme. Simplicity is the key. With a bamboo brush, Chinese ink, and rice paper, learn the picturesque origins of Chinese characters. Intro to Digital Photography in the Garden begins

Even in the winter, the Garden provides a beautiful, mysterious backdrop for learning the basics of digital garden photography. This class will help you use your camera confidently and creatively. Learn camera handling and basic techniques, then venture into the Garden to practice! Each session begins with a review of student work, followed by instruction, before students head out to photograph the changing scenery. This class is for beginners or those who need a refresher. Intermediate Flower Arranging (Section A) begins

:: Continuing Ed. Classes
Learn advanced styles and complicated design mechanics with a variety of fresh flowers. This class allows you to be more expressive in your designs. You'll master techniques for parallel designs, vase arrangements, and working without floral foam, among other topics. Lectures, hands-on workshops, and critiques are included. Prerequisite: Basic Flower Arranging. The Sunday section of this class takes place at New York Studio of Floral Arts, on West 28th Street in Manhattan. Value in Color begins

:: Continuing Ed. Classes
Develop your understanding of color by focusing on the concept of value— dark and light, warm and cool—within an artwork. Starting with black—and— white media, we will move into color progressively, building on the ideas covered each week as the Garden's colors emerge with the spring season. Weekday Winter Watercolors (Section B) begins

Enjoy nature in the midst of winter by painting conservatory plants, mounted insects, fruits, berries, and more in watercolor, pencil, or line and wash. Heighten observational skills and develop your own style while exploring drawing, color, composition, and watercolor techniques like wet—on—wet and layering. Taxonomy Plates begins

:: Continuing Ed. Classes
Botanical taxonomy, as initiated by Linnaeus, is the science of plant description and classification. This class will focus on plants, but students are also encouraged to study insects, shells, and other natural objects. Using their artist's eye, each student will gather individual collections of nature's bits and pieces and arrange them by commonalities. They will then create illustrated designs based on their collections. BBG's Dr. Kerry Berringer will be our scientific advisor during the first session. The second session will be devoted to drawing and watercolor painting. We should have much on hand for inspiration! MORE INFORMATION (Pre-registration required)

Composting in the City (Section B)

:: Community Horticulture
Leaves, kitchen scraps, garden trimmings, and weeds can all become garden gold through composting. Making dark, rich, crumbly compost doesn't take much time, work, or space. This class covers the essentials: the composting process, how to compost even in small city yards, using finished compost, avoiding and solving problems, and helpful equipment and tools. On February 27, the Linnaean Libation League presents an event dedicated to the desert landscape of Palm Springs, California, circa 1959.
