Brooklyn Watercolor Society

November 16 — January 5, 2003

This year's Holiday Horticulture Display in the Steinhardt Conservatory will be complemented by the sensational work of the Brooklyn Watercolor Society. This collection will showcase recent seasonal work of this long-established association, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2003. The society fosters a creative exchange among its members through watercolor, a beautifully colorful and translucent medium that lends itself to the festive display of holiday plants at BBG.

Mission Statement

The Brooklyn Watercolor Society was founded in 1973 by a group of friends who had painted inside and out for some time. The goal of the society is to foster individual members' skill as painters through education and friendly exchange of ideas. In addition, the society has mounted exhibitions to showcase the creative results of its membership. These exhibits have taken place in Brooklyn and other venues in the metropolitan area. In addition to showing, the society holds meetings 10 times a year for both planning of events and art-related activities. The latter includes paint-outs in various parts of Brooklyn and demonstrations of technique. The society also makes a yearly donation to an organization that supports arts activities or preserves an art heritage. Past recipients include Brooklyn Museum's Children's Art Program, Pratt Institute, Old First Reformed Church, and City Park Fund for the Salt Marsh Nature Center.

About The Members

In general, the artists are trained painters. Many have careers in the visual arts or work as artists, and many teach. A high degree of proficiency in watercolor is a prerequisite for membership. All members have an affiliation with the borough of Brooklyn, which is the only requirement for application. Applicants' portfolios are reviewed twice a year by existing membership. Currently there are 36 active members.
