Drawing From Life features the work of 14 women artists who have painted plants at BBG, from the first decades of the 20th century to the present. The work of Maud H. Purdy—BBG's staff artist for 32 years—is presented side by side with other artists' paintings to reveal how artistic vision and fashions of the time shape work that conforms to centuries-old conventions of botanical art. Paintings, scientific illustrations, herbarium specimens, preparatory sketches, and objects of material culture explore the boundaries between art, science, and craft and invite us to see plants with fresh eyes.
Opening Weekend: September 15 and 16, 2007
Tours of the exhibit with curator Patricia Jonas and many of the participating artists will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, in the Steinhardt Conservatory Gallery.
