Artist's Statement

Conservatories, greenhouses, and terrariums inspire my inquiry into the significance of nature in our culture. My current work in digital printmaking is a visual exploration of nature contained. I study, photograph, and depict plants cultivated in artificial, enclosed spaces. I have photographed plants in these environments extensively. The work on display at Brooklyn Botanic Garden is derived from photographs I took at the Lincoln Park Conservatory in Chicago. I see my work as a visual meditation on the interrelationship between nature and culture. I am interested in people's mediation of their contact with nature. I am equally interested in the ways nature responds to and adapts to people. I have focused on enclosed microenvironments to explore these ideas.
