The BBG Orchid Collection

The BBG has long been known for its diverse and numerous orchid collection. With over 6,000 plants distributed through 240 genera and representing about 980 species from around the world, visitors can often see a wide variety of blooming flowers even at the height of winter. The display is constantly changing as orchids go in and out of bloom and plants are rotated from the growing houses out of view to being on display in the Aquatic House. The orchids in our collection often have very specific and different growing conditions and while many can be seen hanging throughout the house, several cool climate specimens are kept in a temperature controlled case to simulate high altitudes and low temperatures.

Rebecca Bullene is a former editor at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. She is the proprietor of Greenery NYC, a creative floral and garden design company that specializes in botanical works of art including terrariums, urban oasis gardens, and whimsical floral arrangements.
