Taiko Masala Sneak Peek Video

As if we weren’t already over-the-top excited for next weekend’s Sakura Matsuri Festival, Taiko Masala came by the Garden this morning for a preview! They’re called the "Thunder Drummers” for good reason⎯their performance of Japan’s traditional drumming, taiko, rumbles like thunder, especially when they strike the giant 250-pound o-daiko.

Taiko Masala combines the training and discipline of Japanese martial arts with incredibly precise drumming to create a performance that is as awe-inspiring to watch as it is to listen to. Founded by master drummer Hiro Kurashima, the ensemble is based in Brooklyn and hand-makes all of its instruments.

Taiko Masala performs at noon on Sunday, May 2, on the Cherry Esplanade stage. For more info on Taiko Masala and to listen to some of the group's extraordinary drumming, check out www.taiko-masala.com.

For a complete schedule of the 60-plus events and performances taking place at BBG during the festival on May 1 and 2, visit Sakura Matsuri 2010.
