Featured Bloom
Prunus serrulata 'Taoyame' in BBG's Cherry Cultivars Area.

Cherry ‘Taoyame’

Prunus serrulata ‘Taoyame’ (flowering cherry cultivar) in the Cherry Cultivars Area.

Cuttings of this variety were sent from Japan in 1929 from a tree near the Hirano Shrine in Kyoto. Soft-pink semidouble flowers contrast with a deeper pink on the backs and edges of the petals.

Plants in Bloom

  • Hundreds of pink 5-petaled blossoms stand out against a dark trunk and blue sky.

    Cherry Blossoms

Cherry trees usually begin to flower in early April. An individual tree may only bloom for a week or two, depending on the weather. Of course, if they were in bloom all the time, they wouldn’t be so special.
