Resonant Landscapes: Listening to Nature Through Art

What role can art play in helping us face the climate crisis? As part of Climate Week NYC, join Emanuel Admassu of AD–WO in conversation with celebrated artists and designers Suchi Reddy and Olalekan Jeyifous and composer Malloy James to explore how creative practice and cultural institutions can help us listen more deeply to our environment.

The program includes a panel discussion and art walk reflecting on Reddy’s and James’s Turbulence 2025 installation at Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Jeyifous and AD–WO’s collaborative projects, which explore how Latinx and African diasporic beliefs about the intelligence of nature can inform current ecological knowledge. Both artist teams exemplify how public art can incorporate scientific research, open space for dialogue, deepen our sense of connection, and inspire action toward a more just and sustainable world.

    Panel moderator Emanuel Admassu is founding principal of AD–WO and assistant professor at Columbia University, GSAPP. As a practicing architect, urbanist, and educator, Admassu’s work explores the intersections of spatial justice and urbanism. He is currently working on a book that articulates the vibrant relations between animist cultural practices and contemporary urban systems. ad—wo.com

    Suchi Reddy, fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), is an architect, designer, and artist based in NYC. In 2002, she founded Reddymade, which focuses on public art installations, large-scale commercial spaces, and residential projects. Guided by her mantra “form follows feeling,” Reddy’s architectural and artistic practice is informed by her research on neuroaesthetics, which examines the impact our environments have on the brain and body. rmdny.com

    Malloy James is a formally trained musician and sound engineer who embodies an open, fluid, artistic, and engaging approach to contemporary composition and style. In addition to his solo artistic practice, James is an accomplished sound designer, creating ethereal compositions for projects with Lexus International, the National Building Museum, and the Miami Design District, to name a few. He has participated in a number of leading design residencies, including the inaugural summer residency at Alvar Aalto’s Paimio Sanatorium in Finland, the Design Akadamie Saaleck in Germany, and La Becque in Switzerland. James was born and raised in New York City and holds an MFA in Music Composition from the Juilliard School. malloyjames.com

    Olalekan Jeyifous is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work reimagines the intersections of architecture, community, and the environment. His art has been exhibited at the Studio Museum in Harlem, Guggenheim Bilbao, and the Museum of Modern Art, which holds his work in its permanent collection, along with the Art Institute of Chicago and SFMOMA. He is the recipient of the Silver Lion at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale, the 2024 Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, a United States Artists Fellowship, and two NYFA Fellowships. Jeyifous has held residencies at MacDowell, the Drawing Center’s Open Sessions, and the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center, and was co-commissioned to design a monument to Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm for New York City’s She Built NYC initiative. jeyifo.us
